Bathrooms and Plumbing

August 12 to October 6, 2001

There are many steps to having an operational bathroom. You need tiling, fittings, plumbing and a water supply. This page reports on some of the progress. The septic field is already covered on another page. The floor tiles were laid in July, 2001, and the grouting was completed August 6, 2001. (This would have been done earlier, but somehow a package of grout with brownish tint was in with the packages of grey tint grout. Of course that one would end up on Passage island!)

Toilet base connector in place. The colour of the tiles is more accurate in the next photo.

The wooden blocks will support the base of the shower seen at the left of the photo.

Going down below the bathroom floor, the plumbing is taking shape. Much of it is now cut and is being glued when the weather prevents siding from being done. The hot water heater is in place but requires the chimney to be built before it can be fully operational. The water piping is not yet connected.

This photo shows part of the plumbing where the waste from the toilet and the sink join.
One end will join with the main stack, the other end will connect with the septic tank.

September 8 was a day when Ken was able to get started on the drainage system outside of the house. The inside of the house is now almost ready. As usual when doing any work on the Island, having all the parts available is not practical. It is necessary to almost place a pipe before it is possible to decide on exactly the right fitting for that position. However, now most of the pipe is ready to join into the existing drainage system. It will make life a lot easier when there is a drain connected to the bathroom and the kitchen areas, even if the water supply is not yet ready. The parts for much of the water supply have been purchased. But, this is an "indoor job", reserved for wet days!

The drainage connection from the house to the existing system is making progress.

By September 15 considerable progress on the bathroom is evident. Perhaps the most important is that the house now has drainage for the first floor bathroom and the kitchen. Also, the water supply consisting of hot and cold, and an unfiltered line for the toilets. Work has not started on the gas connections yet, but this is anticipated within the next few weeks. Currently the water filters, and pump arrangement is being assembled. Also, the bathroom tiling is nearing completion, which will permit the use of the shower when the water supply is ready.

The total system continues to include the "outdoor flushable".

The domestic water supply pipes are added.

The next two photos show the water filtration components. The small blue filter to the left of the first picture below shows the washable filter used before the pump. Following the pump is a 25 micron to 1 micron two-stage filter, that is followed by a 25 micron carbon filter to remove any chlorine etc, and finally there is a 1 micron filter to catch anything which gets through the earlier filters. There will be two water pumps available in case one fails.
