Chimney

August, 2001 to October 28, 2001

The bricks for the chimney have been selected and will be barged over to the Island with the Finnish stove when the latter has cleared customs, and the tides permit this. So far, a person has been hired to build the chimney, and the basement has been cleaned in the area next to the concrete support for the fireplace.

Picture shows the bare rock at the base of the chimney area.
This will require leveling with concrete before the chimney building starts.

By the end of September 15 the chimney was almost ready for the start of construction. The bricks have all been distributed between the floors, and all that remains is for the concrete base to harden.

The concrete base is formed and poured.

The chimney was built during the last two weeks of October. The details of the build will appear here later as the information was recorded on "analogue film"! The two photos below show details of the finished chimney.

The great advantage to having a chimney is the fact that now heat can be obtained. As the soapstone stove cannot be completed until the broken stones are replaced, a second-hand stove was purchased and installed.
